Cops probing Kanowit riot

KANOWIT: Police are investigating a riot incident which resulted in injuries and property damage in the parking area behind the Kanowit District Office yesterday (Sept 12).

The incident, which had gone viral on social media, came to the attention of the police around 1.30 pm.

Two men were injured and their vehicles damaged in the incident.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri confirmed that a police report was received the same day.

“We are actively tracking down the suspects. The cause of this incident is still under investigation.

“We are advising the public not to act recklessly by breaking the law,” he said.

Mohd Azman called on the community to cooperate and channel any information on the riot to Kanowit Criminal Investigation Division (CID) chief ASP Mohd Faizal Nawi at 016-8657432 or Kanowit district police headquarters at 084-752222.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine or both, upon conviction.
