KUCHING: The district police headquarters (IPD) has significantly reduced three categories of crimes in the city.

Cases of burglaries, other thefts and brawls recorded a significant drop from January to August this year.

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said burglaries saw a decline by 30 cases compared to the same period last year.

“Meanwhile, other thefts involving small items such as gas cylinders, pipes, and drain covers were down by 25 cases.

“The third category, brawls involving individuals or groups, were reduced by 11 cases,” he said when officiating at the IPD monthly assembly this morning.

However, the achievement contrasts with the present scenario on vehicle thefts and robberies, which have seen a spike recently.

From July to Aug 28, there has been an increase of 19 cases in vehicle thefts in the district.

Nonetheless, Ahsmon said the police have achieved success in crippling seven vehicle theft syndicates this year.

In response to the evolving challenges, proactive measures were taken including the establishment of five counter-aggressive teams (CATs) and five new teams known as the ‘lejang’ squad to address the growing vehicle-related crimes.

Ahsmon stressed the need for public cooperation in tackling these crime trends and urged the community to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the police.

The collaboration between law enforcement and the community is crucial to creating a safer environment for everyone, he said.

During the assembly, Ahsmon also presented certificates of appreciation to 17 police officers, a member of the public and the media for their efforts in helping to solve crimes, channelling information and providing accurate news coverage.
