KUCHING: Inspections will soon be carried out to check on the state of fire hydrants in both residential and business areas here.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will work together with the Fire Department (Bomba) on this matter, said Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, warning residents and businesses not to obstruct or tamper with fire hydrants.

“Any impeding, blocking, hiding or covering of fire hydrants is considered a violation of the law as this will severely impede rescue efforts by Bomba,” said after visiting those who had lost four houses in a fire on Saturday evening at Kampung Tabuan Dayak, yesterday.
.
“Further checking and assessment must be done by the Land and Survey Department together with Bomba to ensure fire hydrants are installed at strategic locations to avoid problems in the future,” he added.

During the visit, Wee handed over cooking utensils, stove, kettle, diapers and milk to the 33 fire victims at the temporary shelter at All Saints’ Church accompanied by councillors Mok Chuang Ping, Goh Tze Hui and Kho Teck Wan.

Wee reminded everyone to be vigilant and see to it that they have the necessary fire safety and prevention knowledge to prevent further property loss.

“House owners are advised to keep a fire extinguisher at home and children should stay away from any fire hazard at all times,” he said.
