KUCHING: A revival of Bidayuh cultural pride among the younger generation is going down well in the community.

Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) chairman Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, is delighted to observe an awakening among the Bidayuh new generation, particularly during festive functions, where they proudly don the Bidayuh colours.

He highlighted the significance of the Bidayuh costume identity, which prominently features a mix of red, white, and black colours.

He pointed out that these costumes, tailored differently across different regions such as Bau, Padawan, Penrissen and Serian, serve as a symbol of Bidayuh heritage and unity.

“This is something that we should continue to propagate, especially among the younger generation,” he told the New Sarawak Tribune.

DBNA, he said, as the umbrella non-governmental organisation (NGO) representing the Bidayuh community, has been actively working towards the protection, preservation, conservation and exhibition of Bidayuh culture.

Established with the objective of safeguarding Bidayuh heritage, he said that DBNA has focused on various elements of culture, including traditional dances, folklore, hymns and the distinctive costumes and accessories worn by the Bidayuh people.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by the Bidayuh community, especially regarding the decline of traditional rituals such as the Gawai festival, he remains optimistic.

“With the elevation of technology, we can use the technology to document all these, so at least it will still be around.

“Even though it is not in live mode, at least it is documented, and the younger generation can still look into it and see the traditions, customs and rituals practised by their parents and grandparents in the past,” he said.

Towards this end, he assured the community that DBNA is fully committed to promoting, propagating and exhibiting Bidayuh culture, costumes, and traditions.

He emphasised the significance of these endeavours in preserving the rich heritage of the Bidayuh people and encouraging a sense of cultural pride among the younger generation.

“We at DBNA will do whatever is possible to propagate, promote, and exhibit our culture, costumes, and traditions.

“That is very important to us,” he said.
