KUCHING: The State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba Sarawak) will conduct surveillance operations and inspections on premises to ensure the emergency exists are clear.

Its director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said this because of the incoming stock supplies of items and equipment for premises, especially supermarkets and hypermarkets, in view of the upcoming Gawai celebration.

He said the surveillance and inspection are part of the department’s duties in ensuring that buildings comply with safety regulations.

“It is the department’s tradition to organise fire safety awareness campaigns during festivities and Gawai is no exception.

“Our personnel will be conducting surveillance and inspection on numerous buildings to ensure that they are not keeping stocks in unsuitable places such as the staircases and emergency exits.

“Such a situation would pose a danger as it would hamper the evacuation process in an event of a fire,” he said  in his speech during the launching of Fire Safety Campaign in conjunction with Hari Gawai celebration and pre-launching of the Malaysia Day Community Fun Run at Farley Mall today.
