SIBU: The traditional sight of Malay families donning the “Kain Pelikat,” a lengthy chequered cloth wrapped around the hip or waist like a long skirt, has become increasingly rare in modern times, with only the elderly continuing to uphold this tradition.
During a recent community event, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee expressed his delight in seeing the younger generation embrace this cultural attire once again.
“This morning’s event was particularly special; not only did we partake in the ‘ketuk-ketuk sahur’ (knocking on doors for the Sahur programme), but we also had Sahur together, with many wearing sarongs and kain pelikat.
“Nowadays we seldom see our youngsters wearing this kain pelikat; I am glad to see them wearing them today,” said Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, And Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
He said this when met by reporters at MUC Hall during the Sahur with the community programme, organised by several Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) in the Nangka constituency this morning (Apr 6).
Earlier, Dr Annuar had attended the Ketuk Sahur Programme, which was organised for the first time by the JKKKs in the Nangka constituency.
Throughout this Ramadan, with 11 sessions of the programme, a total of 550 households received Sahur alms across the Nangka constituency.
“The unique programme received an encouraging response from local residents. On behalf of the Nangka Service Centre, I extend heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in making this programme a success.
“InshaAllah, we will continue with good programmes like this in the future,” he expressed.
Dr Annuar hopes that through such initiatives, community bonds, especially within the Muslim community, can be strengthened.
“Let us celebrate this Hari Raya with full unity awareness, maintaining the purity and goodness of Islam, and further cementing ties among the multicultural and multireligious communities in Sarawak,” he added.
