Driver surrenders after viral rear-end collision with motorcycle

KUCHING: A local driver has surrendered to the police after his reckless act of rear-ending a motorcycle along Jalan Pending went viral yesterday.

The incident, believed to have occurred around 4.50 pm, attracted widespread attention when a 29-second video clip from another vehicle’s rear camera footage was uploaded to Facebook.

In the clip, it depicts the motorcycle cruising down the middle of the road when a Perodua Viva suddenly rear-ends it.

The driver then sped off, leaving the motorcyclist with light injuries.

Since then, the video has amassed over 140,000 views, 3,600 likes, 995 comments, and 2,100 shares.

Meanwhile, Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah when contacted, confirmed that the driver turned himself in to the police on the same day.

“The suspect, a 47-year-old man, gave himself up at the Kuching Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division office at 6.52 pm.

“He was granted police bail pending prosecution,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

It carries imprisonment for a term of up to five years and a fine of up to RM15,000, and a driver’s licence suspension for a period of up to five years, upon conviction.
