KUCHING: A drug addict was sentenced to five years in prison and one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court here for repeated consumption of methamphetamine and amphetamine drugs.

Tarmizi, 38, from Kampung Kudei, pleaded guilty before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman on today (Oct 12).

He has three previous records, one in 2019 and two in February 2023, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Tarmizi was accused of again consuming illegal drugs, namely methamphetamine and amphetamine, at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) of the Kuching District Police Headquarters, at around 2.40pm on July 20.

Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both, while Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act carries a prison term of not less than five years and not more than seven years and a maximum of three strokes of the cane if convicted.

The court also ordered him to be placed under police supervision for three years after serving his prison sentence.

According to the case facts, the police had arrested the accused, and initial urine screening tests came back positive for drugs.

The report from the Pathology Department of the Sarawak General Hospital confirmed that he tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

Deputy public prosecutor Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim handled the prosecution for the case while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
