Drugstore owner gets RM10,000 fine

SIBU:  A drugstore proprietor was slapped with a fine of RM10,000, in default, two months’ imprisonment here Tuesday (Sept 19) for having unregistered products for sale at his premises.

When the two charges were read and explained to Wong Yiik Hung,58, through an interpreter, he understood the consequences of maintaining his plea of guilt.

Sessions Court Judge Marutin Pagan fined him RM5,000, in default, one month’s jail on each charge.

On the first count, he was found to have sold one bottle of “Pipawang Birdnest Chong Chau”. which is not a registered product at his store in Central Road on Oct 26 last year.

The second charge stated that he was found to have for sale nine unregistered products at his store on the same day.

Both offences were framed under 30(1) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetic Regulations 1984 and punishable under Section 12(1) of the Sale of Drugs Act 1952 which upon conviction, provides for a fine up to RM25,000 or three years’ jail or both, and for a second or subsequent offence liable to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or five years’ jail or both.

Wong, who was not represented by legal counsel, opted to pay the fine.
