Duo fined RM2,500 each for drugs

KUCHING: Two individuals who are lovers were each sentenced to a fine of RM2,500 or six months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today for possessing 0.83 grams of Methamphetamine last April.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali passed the sentence on Abdul Arif Aiman, 29, and Ezzattul Fitri, 28, after they pleaded guilty to one charge read out jointly before her.

According to the charge, the lovers were alleged to have in their possession the prohibited substance in a room upstairs of a house in Kampung Bako here at about 11.45am on April 19.

Therefore, both the accused had committed an offence under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and could be punished under Section 12 (3) of the same act for possession of dangerous drugs.

Upon conviction, the offender is punishable by a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both.

According to the facts of the case, during the incident, a team of police from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) arrested the two accused who were suspected of being involved in drug activities in a house.

During the inspection, police found a white transparent package containing lumps of crystal inserted behind a loudspeaker hanging in the scene.

The case items were then taken to the Malaysian Department of Chemistry and a report confirmed that the items contained Methamphetamine weighing 0.83 grams.

Prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad while the accused were not represented by a lawyer.
