KUCHING: The country’s current economic situation has caused an increase in job scams, claims Sarawak Community Policing Association chairman Datuk John Lau Pang Heng.

He said many unemployed people chose to look for easy money by scamming others.

“When people lose their jobs, they cannot pay for their expenses, so they will evaluate the best means to get cash the easy way,” he told New Sarawak Tribune today.

“We want people to know that there are more opportunities in Sarawak than (for example) in Liberia,” he stressed.

Lau has personally visited countries in Western Africa, and he said the economy there was far behind Sarawak’s.

“Therefore, we call upon our youths especially, and parents, to check with the relevant authorities before they become victims of scam.”

He said it was better to check with the police or the Foreign Affairs Ministry before going to work abroad.

“Prevention is always better than cure, and being cheated once, it may affect the youth’s life.”

Lau urged victims of job scams to lodge police reports so that the suspects can be prosecuted.
