KUCHING: The youth need to improve their knowledge, skills, and competitiveness to seize the opportunity of Sarawak’s open economy.

Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Minister Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn said that with the emphasis on the green energy sector being worked on by the state government, the youth must be agile to take advantage of the existing opportunities so that they are qualified to handle the job opportunities provided later.

“The introduction of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 Action and Implementation Plan has clearly laid out the steps and actions that need to be taken to achieve the new development.

“We are driving the development of our infrastructure to improve living standards, grow the economy to provide business and employment opportunities, and train Sarawak’s children to become more skilled and increase the level of income.

“With the various developments and Sarawak’s own initiatives that successfully explore sources of income, Sarawakian children are needed to be in line with the needs of the state’s future,” he said.

He said this when representing the Premier at the Sarawak Education Expo officiating ceremony at Yayasan Sarawak here today (July 8).

Following this, he commended the expo as a good effort to ensure that students are able to get the latest information about the educational opportunities available in Sarawak.

He noted that Sarawak has established higher education institutions such as Swinburne University of Technology, Curtin University, the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), i-CATS University College, Kolej Laila Taib (KLT), and the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) to benefit the children of Sarawak.

“The establishment of institutions of higher learning in Sarawak is an effort by the state government to provide opportunities for children to be able to continue their studies both in academics and skills.

“Furthermore, through education, they are also able to measure their personal potential and the dream career that they want to pursue,” he said.

Adding on, Sagah stated that if there are school leavers who failed to continue their studies at public higher education institutions, they should not be worried as they still have the opportunity to further their studies at Sarawak-owned institutions.

“Use this opportunity to the best of your ability. We will ensure that you, the children of Sarawak, are able to continue your studies at these institutions without having to worry about financial problems because the Sarawak Foundation is able to finance the cost of your studies here through the sponsorship schemes provided,” he said.
