Rokas speaks to the media after the courtesy visit to Abang Johari

KUCHING: The European Union (EU) is always open to proposals and views concerning green technology and the hydrogen economy.

The EU Ambassador to Malaysia, Michalis Rokas, said that the EU possesses relevant technology to contribute to Sarawak’s green energy policy.

“We have discussed with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg regarding Sarawak’s green energy policies, such as sustainable biofuels, green hydrogen, ammonia, and sustainable aviation fuels,” he said.

“The EU has cutting-edge technology and expertise in this field, and we are ready to invest and collaborate with this state.”

“I am delighted to have discussed digitalisation with the Premier because the EU also has technology that can assist,” he added.

He said this after paying a courtesy visit to Abang Johari at Wisma Bapa Malaysia on Thursday.

He also acknowledged that Sarawak has the potential to produce more green energy from its natural resources, a potential that the state government is actively exploring.

He highlighted the Premier’s support for enhanced cooperation between the EU, Malaysia, and Sarawak in their pursuit of sustainable growth.

“Sarawak, with its abundant natural resources, is recognised as a leader in Malaysia’s journey towards becoming a green state.”

“This collaboration is seen as an opportunity to attract increased EU investments in Sarawak, benefiting both the state and the companies already operating in the region.”

“The state needs to nurture its people’s talents to support these policies, and in the European Union, we also provide training for this purpose,” he added.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, and Sarawak Deputy Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datuk Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.
