KUCHING: The Sarawak government will set up its own shared laboratory in every district in the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said with the initiative, the schools could share the lab among the schools in the district to conduct basic experiments.

He said this shared lab was to overcome the issues of some schools that were not equipped with a laboratory.

“The problem is with the federal government policy and not our government that our schools are not equipped with the lab, unless the school is a science school.

“I have complained about this matter and that is why during the federal Cabinet meeting held here last September 16, I said to them to set up the lab.

“And Sarawak, because it takes time for the federal government to do it, we will set up our own shared lab, and from there we could have more students master subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM),” he said.

He said this in his speech during the 2023 Kuching Zone Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Convention at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre, here today.

Earlier, Abang Johari said it was crucial for the state to cultivate an interest in STEM among the students, especially Bumiputera students to develop more talents in the subject.

“That is why we developed CENTEXS (Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak), to train our children in gaining the latest knowledge on technology.

“And this is what has been done by our state, by establishing our own institution that focuses on STEM,” he added.
