SIBU: Express boat services for the Sibu-Kuching sector have been temporarily suspended during the inter-zone travel ban period from Aug 1 to 14.

A service operator here, who declined to be named, said that the suspension notice had been placed at their ticket counter for the information of travellers.

The notice indicates that the services will resume on August 15 if the travel ban between zones is allowed then.

“The main reason (to temporarily stop the service) is because the low number of passengers is further compounded by the fact that Kuching, which was until recently a red zone, has just turned yellow.

“So, we do not want to take risks,” he said when contacted on Sunday.

Sarawak Rivers Board (LSS) Region II assistant controller Hatta Morshidi, when contacted today, said his office had not issued any instructions to temporarily suspend express boat services for the Sibu-Kuching sector.

“Travel between zones is still allowed provided there is a valid permit from the police for reasonable reasons for passengers who want to go to Kuching.

“Express boat services are categorised as important services and there are no barriers for them,” he added.
