KUCHING: More hospitals and public facilities need to be developed to cater to an increasing elderly population, said Deputy Premier Datuk Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said since Sarawak will be the first state to reach the aged status by the year 2028, such facilities will ensure quality of life for the elderly is enhanced by considering their unique needs and capacities.

“The thing is when we reach a certain age, we just want to enjoy life as it is, we want to ensure that Kuching is a good place to retire.

“We have good food, the city is so peaceful, it is just a matter of facilities which need to be upgraded,” he said.

“Establishing a liveable and healthy community starts with providing services and facilities that cater to people of all ages, including of course the elderly,” he said.

He said this during a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony between Kuching City South Council (MBKS) and Curtin University on Wednesday (August 2).

On another note, he stated that the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration and sharing best practices among the cities.

“By working together, they can make significant progress in enhancing the lives of older adults and creating inclusive communities for people of all ages,” he said.

“Such initiatives can have a positive impact on the quality of life and well-being of the people living in the city.

“Collaboration and dedication from local authorities are essential to building vibrant and thriving communities,” he added.

Also present during the signing was MBKS Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
