SIBU: A male student was duped by a syndicate that offered him a non-existent job on social media.

According to Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, the victim reported the scam at a police station on Sept 12.

As reported, the victim said that he undertook a job that was advertised in Instagram that offered money back if he successfully performed the given task and successfully raised the sales rating.

“The task given required the victim to screenshot and purchase goods from Lazada based on the link they shared.

“Moreover, the victim needs to make a payment based on the price of the item into the given account.

“His first task was successful in getting his money back as promised which boosted the victim’s confidence in the ‘job’, hence, he intended to continue the next tasks given,” he said, adding that the victim contacted and dealt with the ‘employer’ through Instagram.

Unfortunately, Zulkipli said, the 18-year-old suffered a loss of RM1,139 when completing the second and third tasks as his money was not returned after making a payment into two bank accounts.

“Therefore, I would like to advise members of the public to not easily believe and undertake any online job offers that has unclear job opportunities but promise returns or commissions.

“The public should always be careful and take appropriate preventive measures so as not to become a victim of such fraudulent activities,” he said.
