KUCHING: False reports lodged by individuals in the district are increasing and the problem is worrying because eight cases have been recorded from January to August so far.

This is a 100 per cent increase compared to last year’s figure of four cases for the same period.

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the false reports were made by individuals in an attempt to cover up their financial and debt problems.

“Recently, from Aug 9 to 21, we received reports lodged by three locals aged between 31 and 34, who claimed to be victims of robbery, vehicle theft and cash stolen from vehicle.

“However, further investigations revealed that the reports lodged by the three individuals were false,” he said.

The cases have been referred to the deputy public prosecutor and they will be charged in court under Section 182 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, they face a maximum fine of RM2,000 or imprisonment up to six months or both.
