KUCHING: Families whose lineage includes Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg came together for a gathering at a hotel here on June 30.

It involved more than 100 family members of Datuk Patinggi Abang Abd Ghapur, Datuk Abang Pata and Datuk Bandar Abang Kassim.

The event saw the presence of family members from the third to the seventh generation, highlighting the enduring legacy of their ancestors.

The family said Abang Johari represents the fourth generation, carrying forward the lineage of Abang Abdul Ghafur.

This year Dr Abang Zainal Latif, a representative from the third generation, was the guest of honour at the gathering.

The family’s first gathering took place in Sungai Lembing, Pahang on March 18, 2017, bringing together over 500 family members from Brunei, Singapore and Sarawak.

A second gathering, held in August 2017 in Malacca, was graced by Abang Johari.

“Through this grand gathering, the significance of preserving family ties and cultural heritage was underscored, fostering a strong sense of unity and belonging among the descendants scattered across different regions in Sarawak, Melaka, Pahang and Brunei,” said the family.
