KUCHING: Drugs and illicit substances worth an estimated RM33,023,017.33 were seized in Sarawak over a 22-month period.

Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Well-being Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said since June 2020, there were also 14,574 arrests linked to drug and substance abuse.

“These outstanding achievement is the result of regular, integrated and effective operations under the Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) and state’s One Stop Committee (OCS) to address drug and substance issues’ (MIDS) technical committee led by ACP Jasmirol Jamaluddin during his tenure from June 2020 to April 2022,” she said.

She said this is a press conference after receiving a courtesy call from the Sarawak NCID at the Baitulmakmur Building II here on Tuesday (April 12).

“The effects of the drug seizures carried out by ACP Jasmirol and his team reduced or rescued 387,011 from getting addicted to or abuse drugs.

“It also managed to curb abuse by 3,096,093 times per month of various types of drugs such as syabu, ketamine, cannabis, ecstasy powder, erimin and so on,” she said.

Most importantly, she said it has reduced or cut the supply and distribution of drugs to addicts and potential addicts as well as reduced drug abuse cases.

“Apart from that, under Jasmirol, the seizure of traffickers’ properties and arrests under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act (LPPK) also increased significantly.

“Since June 2020, property worth RM10,244,472.8 has been seized, and 59 arrests under LLPK were recorded,” she said.

Fatimah, who is also the OSC MIDS chairman, said that the close cooperation with the NICD Sarawak under Jasminol has had a very positive impact.

“This includes inter-agency collaboration and cooperation between agencies in the OSC MIDS because tackling drug issues cannot be dependent on one agency alone,” she said.

In a nutshell, she said that Jasmirol has been instrumental to achieve Sarawak OSC MIDS’s action plan goal to cut and reduce the supply of illicit drugs and substances.

“In the process, we are able to reduce more demand for drugs and substances in Sarawak,” said Fatimah.
