KUCHING: A female cashier was fined RM1,500, in default one month’s imprisonment, for selling illegal lottery tickets in Batu Kawah here.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar meted out the sentence against Rinny Yusop, 23, from Kuala Baram on Tuesday (April 4) after she pleaded guilty to a charge framed under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

She was accused of selling lottery tickets without a licence at a grocery store in a shopping centre in Batu Kawah around 3.40pm on Sept 28, 2022.

If convicted, the accused can be fined up to RM5,000 or sentenced to prison for a term of up to six months or both.

Based on the facts of the case, a police team conducted a raid after suspecting that illegal gambling activities were taking place in the store.

The accused was arrested and her phone seized as well as RM80 in cash.

Further investigation and a report confirmed that the accused’s phone had illegal lottery numbers.
