SIBU: “I want to meet my children,” sobbed Nini, a female prisoner, expressing her heartfelt longing for her two young ones as she prepares to return home under the Licensed Release of Prisoners (PBSL) initiative.

Nini (not a real name), now 28 weeks pregnant, shared her eagerness to care for her children, aged two and three, whom she has dearly missed.

“I am very happy and thankful to the prison authority for allowing me to serve the remaining four months of my sentence in my home under the programme.

“This will allow me to live like any other normal person,” she told reporters on Friday (April 26) at Sibu Prison.

Nini’s story marks a significant milestone, being the first pregnant female beneficiary of PBSL in Sarawak and the fourth nationwide.

She has been sentenced by the Sibu court to serve 13 months’ imprisonment in Sibu Prison for a petty crime and would serve her remaining four months at her home.

Nini pledged not to commit the same mistake again and vowed to strictly abide by the conditions set for home detention.

“I will not repeat the same mistake which I had made. I will abide by all condition of the home detention,” she said.

The programme was witnessed by Sarawak Prison director, Teyun Thian Eim and Nini’s sister acted as her guarantor for her release for home detention.

“Prison inmates involved in the initiative are those individuals with chronic diseases, the elderly, persons with disabilities and expectant mothers,” said Teyun.

The initiative is also for prisoners serving jail sentences of four years and below for petty crime; senior citizen above 70-year old, and women prisoners who are 28-week pregnant.
