“So far, we have apprehended four suspects involved in the incident,” said Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah in response to the latest development on the case when approached by the media yesterday after attending Kor Cadet Police’s parade in conjunction with its 45th anniversary celebration held at the headquarters here on Wednesday.

A total of 228 students from 19 secondary schools in Miri took part in the parade.

According to Lim, all four suspects aged from 15 to 17 years were picked up from various locations in Miri after the video went viral.

One of the four suspects detained is a student at a secondary school in Miri.

In the video, five suspects seen were throwing punches while kicking the 13-year-old victim. The alleged incident took place inside a vacant building somewhere in the city.

A day after the video went viral, the victim’s mother lodged a police report.

Meanwhile, on students’ participations in Kor Cadet activities, Lim lauded their avid interest.

“I hope we could mould their positive attitudes,” he opined.

He also expressed his concern over criminal activities involving youths especially school students.

Thus, he believed that active participation from communities especially parents and teachers play crucial roles as part of prevention efforts.

In 2018, a total of 1,286 school students were detained nationwide for their involvement in 1,042 criminal activities.

On Kor Cadet Police, since its establishment on March 2, 1970, a total of 1,942 schools nationwide with 117,246 students (as of January 31, 2019) are active in the body.
