Fire razes 5 squatter homes, leaving 10 homeless

MIRI: Five squatter house in Pujut Corner here went up in flames, leaving 10 people homeless last night (May 23).

Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) spokesman Awang Mohd Hazmin Awang Zainal said firemen from both Lopeng and Miri Sentral stations were despatched to the scene after they were alerted to the incident at 11.30 pm.

When they arrived at the scene approximately six minutes later, the fire was at its height.

There were no reports of injuries or casualties.

Awang Mohd said the occupants of one of the houses were not at home at the time of the fire as they had returned to their village.

“Besides using the water from the fire engine water tank, we also had to source water from the nearby fire hydrants,” he said.

Also seen arrived at the scene were the police, personnel from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).

The fire was brought under control at 11.57 pm.

The cause of the fire and total losses are yet to be ascertained.
