Fire reduces workers’ quarters to ashes

KUCHING: A 6-door workers’ quarters at Sungai Meris in Balingian, Mukah, was razed to the ground last Friday night.

A spokesman of the State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said 15 workers, all from Indonesia, were living there when the fire broke out around 9.30pm.

Responding to a distress call at 9.45pm, three firefighters, led by Senior Fire Officer II Azahari, were dispatched to the scene.

They were also assisted by three members of Fire and Rescue Volunteers Units of Balingian.

The spokesman said the firefighters arrived at the scene at 10.20pm and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to other nearby quarters.

The operation ended at 11.21pm and no human casualties and injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire and estimated loss has yet to be ascertained as at press time.
