LINGGA: While the country was abuzz with efforts to bring home Malaysian detainees from Cambodia, a fisherman here was preoccupied with his routine of going out to the sea and bringing home a good catch.
His hard work paid off when he returned with a fantastic catch.
The 30-year-old man, who wished to be identified only as Firdaus, said he managed to catch a total of 209 fish in just one night.
He used a drift net, known by the local fishermen as “pukat ranto”.
Firdaus was met at the jetty upon his return from the sea.
His wife, who was at the jetty waiting for him, when approached for comments, admitted the catch was out of the norm.
“We give thanks to God. Altogether, he brought home a total of 209 ikan panjang (panjang fish). Another two were terusan fish,” she added.
According to her, it had been quite some time that her husband came home with a good catch.
“I hope other fishermen will also have good catches,” she added.
Firdaus, who is a father of one and resided in Kampung Hulu Lingga, said this was the first time since becoming a fishermen that he managed to bring home with such a good catch.
The ikan panjang, depending on its size, can fetch between RM18 and RM20 per kilogramme.
“This is not taking into account the fish maw, which is sold separately, and can fetch much higher prices,” he added.
According to Firdaus, the ikan panjang maw or lupe ikan as it is locally called, can fetch several thousands of ringgit per kilogramme.
