KUCHING: A local fisherman, who was reported missing at sea after his boat capsized near Pahat Island, had to stay on his overturned boat prior to his rescue.

The incident happened yesterday (Nov 19) when 44-year-old Atta Akil set out to sea in his fiberglass boat at 5 am. He encountered large waves in the Telaga Air waters, which led to the capsizing incident.

Fortunately, another angler noticed the victim’s distress and promptly came to his rescue, taking him safely to the Telaga Air jetty.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) assistant director of operations Henderi Ardimansyah said the victim’s wife received information about her husband’s situation from her sister around 11.45 am.

Firefighters from Petra Jaya station were promptly deployed to the scene, about 25km away, after being alerted of the incident.

Once Atta arrived safely at the jetty, he was handed over to the authorities for further action.

Following that, the rescue operation concluded at 4 pm.

In light of the ongoing northeast monsoon season, the maritime community is urged to exercise extra caution and adhere to safety precautions when venturing into the waters.

The public is advised to stay informed about weather forecasts, ensure proper safety equipment is onboard, and, whenever possible, avoid venturing out alone during adverse weather conditions.
