KUCHING: Two families are seeking assistance with essential supplies after their residences on Jalan Kemuning Matang experienced flooding early Sunday (Jan 28).

The first house accommodates 12 residents, including a young girl and an elderly woman while, the second house houses 16 residents, including five children.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firemen from the Petra Jaya station were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at 9.42am.

Upon arrival, they found that the lower levels of the houses were inundated by floodwaters up to knee level.

Despite the team’s advice to evacuate to a temporary relief centre, the families opted to stay on the upper floors of their homes.

However, recognising their immediate needs, both families requested for basic necessities such as food and medical supplies.

Acknowledging the request, the team has communicated the families’ needs to the Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for further assistance.
