Former Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud

KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has confirmed that former Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is currently undergoing treatment at his private residence here and is in ‘OK’ condition.

“He (Taib) is still under treatment at home. We have nurses and doctors from Normah Medical Specialist Centre.

“On his condition, I have not received the latest report yet, but he is OK,” he told reporters after the launch of Civil Service Day 2024 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday (Feb 7).

Abang Johari added that he has yet to meet Taib who is still under treatment.

Meanwhile, the police have confirmed that Taib is at Demak Jaya, his private residence in Petra Jaya here.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata told reporters this during the launch of this year’s Chinese New Year Ops Selamat at the Sarawak police contingent headquarters here on Wednesday.

“At the moment, he (Tun Taib) is still in his own home,” Mancha was quoted as saying.

The confirmation follows police reports filed against Taib’s wife Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi Taib for taking him from a private hospital here, allegedly against medical advice, at 11.56 pm on Saturday.

On Monday, Mancha said the case is being investigated under Section 336 of the Penal Code (causing hurt by an act which endangers the life or the personal safety of others).

He called on the public not to share or speculate on the issue as action could be taken against those sharing false information.

In the first police report filed at almost 2 am on Sunday, a complainant claimed that Raghad removed her husband “despite being advised to have the patient stay in the hospital for proper and adequate treatment”.

According to the report, the hospital also has a copy of a letter from a law firm to Raghad instructing her to notify the firm if Taib was to be discharged.

A second police report was filed by Taib’s family member late on Sunday night.

In an open letter shared with the media on Wednesday, Raghad said there has been an online campaign to tarnish her image and reputation.

She claimed her only concern is the well-being of her husband.
