KUCHING: Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) concurs with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg that trust is the formula to maintain peace and unity among the various communities in Sarawak.
Its chief executive Datuk Aloysius Dris noted that the formula has even attracted the interest of Minister of National Unity Datuk Halimah Mohamad Sadique who visited Sarawak last month.
Dris said it was heartening to see Malaysian leaders not just acknowledging but wanting to learn from Sarawak’s ability to maintain the unity and peace among its people.
“However, ensuring and maintaining unity takes work and effort – it is more than just statements and slogans – it is about protecting and ensuring continuity of the trust that we have built over the years.
“That is why it is imperative to protect and uphold values to ensure that the understanding between the different communities in Sarawak will continue for generations to come.
“Through this element of understanding, I believe that any challenges that come our way can be resolved,” he said in a statement on Friday.
He added that Sarawakians had always strived to move beyond just tolerance and instead, work together towards acceptance through understanding.
On Aug 26, Abang Johari said the element of trust is the core formula towards Sarawak’s peace and unity which had earned the admiration of the federal minister (Halimah).
He said it was an important formula that has kept multi racial and religious people in Sarawak living in harmony ever since.
