Four escapees get 12 months in jail each

KUCHING: Four men were each sentenced to 12 months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court for escaping from the Puncak Borneo Prison Transit Centre (PTP), Padawan in July.

The accused — Diveni Bumby, 36, Robin Bahan, 29, Mohammad Fikkry Azzarudin Abdullah, 26 and Rahmat Simbolan, 38 — pleaded guilty after the charge was read before magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi, on Thursday (Nov 4).

All the accused will serve their prison sentences effective Thursday.

According to the charge, they were alleged to have escaped from the Puncak Borneo Prison around 5.11pm on July 1.

The accused were charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same code.

If convicted, they can be sentenced to a maximum of two years in prison or a fine or both.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant — the officer on duty at the PTP — reported that four detainees escaped through the toilet window and headed to the main gate.

They then headed to the prison complex and into the nearby forest.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Insp Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused were unrepresented.

Two of the four accused were detained under Section of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the crime of breaking into a house under Section 457 of the Penal Code.
