KUCHING: The decision of the state government to provide free university education in state-sanctioned universities to eligible Sarawakians is the best news, said political analyst Datuk Peter Minos.

Minos said the state needs people with skills, expertise and high education to surge ahead in all fields and have the creativity and innovative ability to contribute to Sarawak’s development.

“With income rising and new sources of revenue coming up, I am confident there will be the extra money for the free education proposal.

“Speaking of education, what is of concern is its quality. Yes, our universities must produce graduates who can really think and analyse all things, apart from having the skills and expertise,” he said in a statement yesterday (Oct 4).

He said creativity and innovation are developed by those who think and see things deeply on any matter and issue.

Said Minos: “If and when the Sarawak government has the money (for free education), why not?”

Nevertheless, the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman said it would be a pity if any Sarawakian is denied tertiary education merely on the grounds of lack of finance, stressing that such a matter must not happen.

“Just talk to any Japanese fresh graduate and he or she knows what is being educated at a university as well as having general knowledge and keeping abreast with world affairs. They are well educated,” he said.

On a related matter, he  said a good education must see the full return of English, adding that English is a global language of knowledge, science and technology, commerce and industry.

“There is no way we can escape from it. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is a must.

“Investment in free tertiary education will make Sarawak a great place and that will be a reality, not a wishful thinking,” Minos added.
