APART from the ongoing infrastructure development that is taking place, Balingian assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi also strives to bring more tourism activities to the area.

Moreover, preparations are also underway for Balingian to be upgraded to a full district.

New Sarawak Tribune:

What is your vision for the Balingian constituency?

Abdul Yakub:

This is my second term as the elected representative for Balingian, and my vision is to see Balingian being upgraded to a full district.

Currently, among the infrastructure that has been completed is the sub-district office. Other than that is the mini stadium which will be completed this August.

A new secondary school is also in the works as well as other infrastructure. At the same time, I have requested to have a hotel in our preparation for Balingian to be upgraded to a full district.

What is the main project that you plan to achieve?

We have requested for the construction of roads so that the locals have access to sell their produce and at the same time those from outside can also come to visit our area, thus the economic activities will increase and bring benefits to the locals.

Any issues or problems faced?

Thus far, water and electricity supply have reached more than 90 per cent. However, sometimes there are issues of blackout and water supply cut off maybe due to some broken pipes. So these are the issues we want to address.

Any last achievement in terms of project for Balingian?

Currently there is the waterfront project, and some part of it is completed. Other facilities such as recreational areas will be done under the second phase and now it is still in the process of tender.

What are the upcoming plans for your constituency?

We want to increase the tourism activities here so as to raise the number of visitors to Balingian.

The upcoming attraction will be the Balingian Bederun Festival which will be held from June 2 to 4.

We hope Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will visit and at the same time officiate at the launch of the festival.

The festival is expected to attract about 30,000 visitors, so this will definitely create an economic impact for the locals.
