KUCHING: Employers who have workers from China are urged to cooperate in curbing the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus by sending them for medical check-ups, and do a self-quarantine if necessary.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said although the outbreak, which originated from China, started late last year, the travel ban from coming into Malaysia was only enforced a few days ago.
“We have received reports about some (travellers from China) who came in before (the travel ban).
“That is why I believe as a collective responsibility, it is important for employers to send their workers for a medical check-up.
“It does not matter if they have workers in the service industry, or construction or agriculture sectors. As long as the workers are from any region in China, send them for a medical check-up.
“And if necessary, do a self-quarantine at home,” he told reporters after distributing 1,700 face masks and eight bottles of hand sanitisers to Kuching Chung Hua Primary School No. 3 in Jalan Padungan, here yesterday.
Dr Yii further mentioned that the World Health Organisation (WHO) had declared the coronavirus as a public health emergency, thus the Health Ministry would set up a few protocols in accordance to this.
“I was informed that the ministry will be having a meeting and then they will come up with recommendations on different issues relating to this coronavirus,” he said.
