KUCHING: The state government is fully committed to the development of human capital by equipping youths with the necessary skills and knowledge.

Batang Sadong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said various programmes have been designed and are geared towards youth development as they would lead the state and country in the future.

She noted that 43 percent of Sarawak’s 2.8 million population are youths between the ages of 15 and 40.

“These constitute almost half of the state’s population, with Kuching recording the highest number of youths at 343,500,” she said.

Nancy revealed that Institute for Youth Research Malaysia (IYRES), an agency under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, was conducting a study on Sarawak youth index.

“Twelve key domains are used to measure the quality of youth in Sarawak and the resulting index (later) will provide guidance on identifying areas for improvement and in turn will have a positive impact on the quality of life of the youths.”

Nancy said this at the Al-Ameen Project appreciation night organised by Sarawak Islamic Information Centre (SIIC) in conjunction with its 11th  anniversary last Friday.

Nancy stated that the Ministry of Youth and Sports had acknowledged that young people were the most important investment and the ministry was prioritising youth as a national asset.

She hoped that stories of youth mentioned in the Quran and during the time of the Prophet would be a catalyst for the Al-Ameen Project participants to succeed as leaders of the future.
