BAU: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is all ready to face opposition parties in the coming 12th State Election.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said that opposition parties including Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) are expected to contest but GPS does not fear them.

For GPS, he said that the ruling coalition knows their strength and he believes that the opposition knows theirs too.

“Well, I am not being arrogant here. But, we are not in politics only during this time. We have gone through those areas during the time of PBDS and Fajar. I think those times are even worse.

“Now is nothing as compared to those days especially during the election in the late 1980s and the early 1990s, whereby the state coalition and the opposition, the difference is very small,” he said to reporters when asked if GPS felt any pressure from the Malaya-based opposition parties and PSB.

He added that he believes the people of Sarawak will support GPS and it will win handsomely in the election.

“I believe the thrust of GPS has always been ‘Sarawak First’, and if you are a Sarawakian who loves Sarawak, you will support us.

“If you are a Sarawakian, but who looks towards Malaya, then support those parties that come from Malaya,” he said.

While respecting his counterpart from Semenanjung Malaysia, he said as a Sarawakian, he believes that it is only right that the people be patriotic to the state and love the state.

“Overall, I think we put everything else aside and we must support Sarawak based parties,” he said.

To a question on who will replace the late Tan Sri Datuk Amar James Jemut Masing in the Baleh seat, Abdul Karim said the state and family members are still mourning the passing of the former, thus GPS has not come to that stage to decide yet.
