MIRI: Motorists in Sarawak still need to carry their driving licence and display the road tax on their vehicle windscreen.

This reminder comes in the wake of a recent announcement by the Ministry of Transport Malaysia that motorists no longer need to physically carry their driving licence or display their road tax on their vehicle’s windscreen.

Sarawak Minister for Transport Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin in a statement yesterday (Feb 20), said motorists crossing Sarawak’s border to Brunei Darussalam and Kalimantan Barat must abide by the laws and regulations of the respective countries which maintain the usual procedure where physical road tax are required to be displayed on their vehicles and the drivers required to carry their driving licence.

“My Ministry will work closely with the Consul General Office of Brunei Darussalam and Consul General Office of Indonesia in Kuching on the subject matter and also bring it up in the BIMP EAGA meeting,” Lee said.

On February 10 this year, federal Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced that the ministry and JPJ will no longer need drivers to carry around a physical copy of their driving licence and do not need to have the road tax displayed on their vehicle windscreen.

The drivers just need to download the MyJPJ app from the Apple App Store or Google PlayStore or the Huawei App Gallery.

“The public should not panic because during this early stage all owners of private vehicles are given time to adapt to the digital system,” Loke added.

The Minister said drivers can still obtain a physical copy of their road tax from JPJ offices or the post office and stick it onto their car as well as carry their driving licence.
