KUCHING: With 1000 trees to be planted accompanied with the pouring rain last Saturday (Oct 15), the students and staff from i-CATS UC rose to the challenge in helping the Greening Sarawak campaign.

Sixty-five students and 35 staff, along with the officers from Forest Department Sarawak (FDS), set out last week to plant trees in the Telaga Air Area.

“We want students to be closer with volunteerism and even more when it comes to improving the environment, a matter that we believe is crucial now in this age.

“Matters and knowledge that revolves around sustainability is something we believe is more effectively taught through an out-of-class setting like this,” said Bachelor of Software Engineering Head of Programme Nurlaila in a press statement today (Oct 19).

Students from Engineering Aggrotech and Software Engineering were among the participants in the noble effort.

The i-CATS UC’s representatives set out from campus to Telaga Air at 7AM in the morning.

On site, the students and staff were exposed first-hand to the field work of FDS.

They were introduced to the Greening Sarawak campaign and how it has positively affected Sarawak.

Some 1399 trees were successfully planted during the campaign.

“We all managed to plant hundreds of saplings, aside from experiencing how hard it is to actually plant. I believe the campaign has given us inspiration and made us appreciate our lives even more through planting trees,” added Joaquin Breslin, one of the student volunteers.

The Greening Sarawak campaign is a manifestation of the state’s commitment to the global initiative in Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR).
