IAK to hold exhibition, symposium for Deepavali

KUCHING: The Indian Association Kuching (IAK) will be holding an exhibition and symposium on Indian Culture in conjunction with the coming Deepavali celebration. President of IAK, Nadison Rathenum said that several interesting activities have been lined up for the upcoming Deepavali celebration on November 6, 2018.

“The upcoming activity is the Indian Cultural exhibition and symposium which will be held on October 6 and 7, 2018. “The exhibition will take place at Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall here, where there will be interesting exhibits of Indian culture, and also activities for the general public to enjoy,” he said during a press conference at IAK building in Rock Road here yesterday.

A cultural dinner will also be held on October 6 and 7, and the Minister for Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah is expected to officiate the event.“A Deepavali charity event will also be staged on October 27, 2018, at IAK hall. This is an annual event organised to provide assistance to the needy and less fortunate.

“The highlight of this year’s Deeepavali celebration will be the ‘Malam Deepavali’ dinner on November 17, 2018 at IAK hall where Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to grace the ceremony,” he said. Nadison also pointed that during ‘Malam Deepavali’, there will be a crowning of Deepavali Saree Queen 2018.

“Apart from that, we also have a presentation of education awards to excellent students for the year 2017 (STPM, SPM, PMR and UPSR students),” he said. The Deepavali Saree Queen 2018 contest is open to all members of society regardless of race and ethnicity. Participant must be aged between 18 and 25 years old in order to qualify for the contest.
