KUCHING: The operation against illegal gambling in the state continued
last week as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) pushed forward to rid the state of gambling activities starting from February 12 to 18, said Sarawak CID chief SAC Dato’ Dev Kumar.
So far a total of 33 raids had been carried out throughout Sarawak that resulted in the arrests of 91 individuals, he pointed out.
The types of gambling raids involved were 18 illegal 4D raids, five cyber gambling raids, three gambling raids in gaming house, four gambling raids in public places and three raids on illegal cock fighting sessions.
Dev added that operations to eradicate online gambling continued with raids being
conducted at 24-hour convenience stores and coffee shops offering reload services to online gamblers.
Pertaining to this purpose, five raids were conducted in Kuching, Bintulu, Sri Aman and Betong that resulted in the arrests of nine service providers and seizure of nine mobile phones and cash amounting to RM534.
18 raids were conducted at counters selling illegal 4D in seven districts.
These raids resulted in the arrests of 18 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM7,442. Mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationeries were also seized.
On 18 Feb at 4.00 pm, a police team from CID HQ led by ASP Rudy Garit
conducted a raid at a cockfighting pit located at a jungle fringe at Sebuyau, Simunjan. This led to the arrests 21 individuals, aged between 24 and 70 years. Two live and two dead cockerels and various gambling paraphernalia were seized. Cockfighting raids were also conducted in Miri and Kota Samarahan that resulted in the arrest of nine individuals.
Two raids were conducted at premises organising gambling in Miri and Sarikei. 11 individuals were arrested for gambling “Holo” and various gambling paraphernalia and cash amounting to RM2,074 were seized. Three raids were conducted in public places in Sibu, Serian and Bau leading to the arrest of 23 individuals involved in gambling ‘Holo.
Various gambling paraphernalia and cash amounting to RM3,940 were also seized.
Of the 91 arrested, 80 were males while the rest were females. They were aged between 19 and 70 years old. Four foreigners were among those arrested.
All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance 1952.
