SIBU: Deputy Minister of Housing, Public Health, and Local Government, Michael Tiang Ming Tee, emphasised the importance of preserving friendly relations between all ethnic groups in the state, regardless of external factors.

Tiang stated, “Under one roof, we want to let outsiders know what the spirit of Sarawak is.”

Speaking at the mid-autumn festival celebration organized by SJK(C) Kiang Hin at its premises in Jalan Teku on Wednesday night (Sept 27), he highlighted the significance of witnessing true harmony in Sarawak through actions, not just words. The event was attended by approximately 1,500 people, including school students, parents, teachers, and local residents.

The Pelawan assemblyman reminisced about his primary school days when he saw the festival celebration being held in the school hall.

He appreciated the organisers’ intentions in utilising school facilities and avoiding unnecessary venue rentals. Tiang believed this approach was commendable and could serve as a learning opportunity for other clubs and organizations.

He suggested that community organisations planning social activities in the future seek permission from the local authority or public-private cooperation organisation responsible for the park’s maintenance.

By fully utilising the park, Tiang believed residents would benefit, as the purpose of public-private cooperation parks is to provide convenient recreational spaces.

Tiang acknowledged the presence of numerous Chinese associations and Chinese primary schools in Sibu. He emphasised the significance of major Chinese festivals, such as the mid-autumn festival, in preserving and passing on Chinese culture.

Tiang regarded Sibu as a key town for preserving Chinese culture, thanks to the Chinese community and social leaders who prioritise cultural values, including the school board of directors.

“The festival is a day for members to celebrate the full moon. I extend my gratitude to the organisers for inviting local residents, students, and parents to participate.

“By celebrating together, holding lanterns, and enjoying moon cakes, we promote friendship and harmony, especially in Sarawak,” he expressed.

Tiang praised Sarawak as a place of diverse cultures, ethnic groups, religions, and beliefs, where everyone lives harmoniously and works contentedly.

Tiang added, “I believe our activities should not be mere superficial events. It is crucial to explain the festival’s origin and significance to the local people, enabling them to understand why Chinese compatriots hold it in such high regard.”

The event featured Chinese cultural dance performances and the distribution of festival gifts, including lanterns. Notable attendees included Kapitan So Teck Kee, the chairman of SJK(C) Kiang Hin’s board of management, Ibrahim Mohidin representing Jemaah Nazir Cawangan Sibu, and Ling Ing Kiong, the headmaster of SJK(C) Kiang Hin.
