KUCHING: Arena Sukan here witnessed over 200 dodgeball enthusiasts from various regions, including Singapore, Kuching, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Miri, gathering for the first-ever Sarawak Open dodgeball tournament on Dec 2 and 3.

Organised by the Kuching Dodgeball Association (KDA), the tournament aimed to introduce emerging talents and clubs in East Malaysia to the competitive dodgeball scene, promote the sport, and foster healthy competition among players from different clubs.

The championship was won by Come For Sarawak Laksa, led by Ooi Kah Heng, who triumphed over their opponents Alpha Quebec. Their victory earned them a reward of RM1,500 in cash, along with trophies and medals.

Individual performances were also recognised, with Khew Jim Kai named Most Valuable Player (Male), and Ong Su Jun securing the accolade of Most Valuable Player (Female).

Sarawak Dodgeball Association president Awg Zaifulizan Abdul Rahman Awg Mohd congratulated the KDA and Curtin Grizzlies Dodgeball Club for organising the tournament.

He noted that the event served as a platform for the dodgeball community to gather while promoting the sport in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, KDA association manager Darren Robin acknowledged the challenges faced by Sarawak in terms of resources for player development but expressed satisfaction in bringing the global dodgeball community to Sarawak, believing it would contribute to the state’s dodgeball development.

“I’m proud of my community and glad they were able to showcase the true Sarawakian hospitality,” he said.
