MIRI: A team of officers from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) in Kuala Lumpur will arrive here today to investigate why five beams of a Pujut by-pass flyover collapsed last Friday.

This was revealed by Minister of Human Resources Kula Segaran Murugeson after he inspected the site on Sunday.

The flyover is part of the ongoing Pan Borneo Highway project.

The collapsed happened around 2.40pm and injured two welders.

Kula has assured that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out by the DOSH forensic team.

“We want to determine what actually happened that day — whether it was just plain human error or something else,” he said, adding that the team would look into the whole process especially the technical aspects.

The investigations, which would take about two to three months to complete should serve as a lesson to the relevant parties to prevent similar incidents from happening in future, he said.

Kula was concerned about the rate of fatalities at construction sites in Malaysia, which is slightly higher than those of other countries.

“It is about time that we strengthen the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994,” he said.

“From 2015 to 2018, an average of 4,000 accident cases occurred at construction sites in Malaysia.”

Kula was accompanied during his visit were Senator Alan Ling, Pujut assemblyman Dr Tiong Choon and DOSH director Mohd Anuar Embi.
