Since its inception in 1990, the ISWA World Congress annually attracts researchers, scientists, professionals, and policy makers from around the world to network and exchange scientific and technical data, policies as well as case studies on a wide range of solid waste management issues.

The Congress serves as a critical platform to bring about positive action and cutting-edge innovation toward sustainable solid waste management with a “think global, act local” approach and is heralded as the industry’s premier event for professionals to meet and exchange ideas to advance scientific and technical knowledge for sustainable solid waste management. The three-day event attracted nearly 1,700 delegates from 65 countries.

This year’s Congress was jointly organised by the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and the Waste Management Association of Malaysia (WMAM) with the support of the Malaysian Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government (KPKT), Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC), Ministry of Air, Water and Natural Resources; Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, and the Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).

Besides a briefing on the waste management technologies for municipal and hazardous waste applied in Sarawak, the half-day study visit focussed on the design, engineering and operations of KIWMP’s Level-4 Sanitary Landfill.

The Park, which is managed and operated by Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, receives approximately 513 tonnes of municipal waste a day from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) as well as some areas under the Serian District Council (SDC). The facility also receives, treats and disposes of hazardous waste from all over Sarawak, the Federal Territory of Labuan and Sabah.

Delegate Mr. Huan Chang Yong of NingBo DaDi Chemical Engineering and Environmental Protection Co. Ltd said he found the technical tour interesting and informative.

“The Sanitary Landfill here is impressive. It was especially interesting to see how the design and operations of the landfill simultaneously addresses the safe and proper management of waste, landfill gas and leachate wastewater.”
