KUCHING: Kuching has been identified by the Malaysia Water Association (MWA) as the proposed host for the International Water Conference (IWC) in 2028, to be presented to the International Water Association (IWA).

Datuk Julaihi Narawi revealed that the IWA delegation, led by IWA executive director Dr Kalanithy Vairavamoorthy, conducted a final assessment to evaluate Sarawak’s ability and suitability to host the conference in 2028.

“Based on the bidding process conducted by the MWA, it seems that we have hope because we are now in the final stage of selection between Kuching, Sarawak, representing Malaysia, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, to host the Worldwide Water Conference in 2028,” said the Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication.

He told the media this after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg with the MWA and IWA delegations on today (July 13).

Julaihi expressed confidence in Sarawak’s readiness and preparations, particularly in providing a suitable venue for the IWC, with the Borneo Kuching Convention Centre or popularly known as BCCK be chosen as the conference venue.

He also mentioned that the Sarawak government had plans to build BCCK II, which is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

“This means that if we are proposed to host the IWC in 2028, we will have another BCCK to fulfil the needs outlined in our bid.”

The announcement of the selected host location will be made by the IWA on Sept 16 in Bordeaux, France.
