Kuching to host animal welfare conference

KUCHING: The Asia for Animals (AFA) Sarawak Conference 2023 will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) over four days from Oct 11.

The conference will gather animal welfare organisations to promote animal welfare and wildlife management in the Asia- Pacific region.

The conference, themed ‘Education and Engagement Bring Change,’ is being organised by the AFA Coalition in collaboration with the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) and hosted by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak).

SSPCA president Datin Dona Drury-Wee said the AFA biennial conference is the largest gathering of animal welfare organisations in Asia.

“The purpose of the conference is to share information, highlight best practices and build strategies to improve the lives of the animals of Asia,” she said at a press conference on Monday (March 6).

She also said that the AFA conference would provide a platform to inspire and educate the people, volunteers, staff, council workers, at the same time engage with and get the message across to the youth today.

Dona who was proud to have won the bid to host the conference in Kuching for the second time revealed that 500 participants will be involved in the event which ill feature 60 speakers.

Deputy Premier Datuk Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was also present, hoped that all those involved in animal care whether in farming or breeding of animals, will join the event.

“The AFA conference will cover five areas – human and animal health, communication, education and research; animal and human interaction, trade in wildlife and rescue centres and animals in captivity,” he said.
