Lanterns light up Batu Kawa Old Street

KUCHING: The old street of Batu Kawa which is usually quiet at night, came alive over the last week when the local community organised a week-long Mooncake Festival Bazaar for the third consecutive year.

The street, decorated with red lanterns, took on a carnival mood with the presence of an arch.

Various food stalls, including a few operated by Muslim vendors, lined up both sides of the main street for customers to enjoy while entertainers showcase their singing talents.

Other entertainment activities including lion dances, cultural and modern dances, singing competition were also held to further enliven the festival.

On Friday night, a lantern procession was held to mark the beginning of the mid-autumn festival.

Led by Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, the procession started from a nearby temple in Batu Kawa and moved along the main street.

A lion dance troupe also took part in the procession, which was participated by the young and old including residents of the Malay and Dayak communities in Batu Kawa, with the lanterns in their hands.
