LIMBANG: Limbang and Lawas will be transformed with the building of world-class roads and other infrastructure by the year 2026, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Sarawak government, he said, was currently developing infrastructure that would change the image of Limbang and Lawas.

He told a press conference here today that the world-class roads would be built without destroying the environment.

“We plan to develop an area near the airport build roads there. So, in the five years to come, this will create a new attraction in Limbang,” he said.

Abang Johari added that Lawas would have the Kuala Lawas Bridge which would be iconic and similar to the London Bridge among its latest infrastructure.

“Imagine dual carriageways and viaducts in Limbang and Lawas. Viaducts can only be seen in developed countries currently.

“But Limbang and Lawas will have these developments and this is the ambition of Gabungan Parti Sarawak to develop Sarawak into a developed state by 2030,” said the chief minister.

Abang Johari added that the coastal road from Kuching would go right up to Lawas and be linked to Brunei to enhance the bilateral relationship between Sarawak and the sultanate.

“And from this, the economic spin offs will be there.

“With the completion of the oil refinery in Lawas, this economy of the northern region will be transformed.

“The agriculture sector will benefit too. When there are first-class roads, we will be able to export our products to neighbouring countries as well as the world,” he said.

Abang Johari added the state government would also build the Lawas Airport although the project had been cancelled by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government. He said construction of Lawas Airport was of strategic importance.

“We have also asked the Deputy Minister of Transport and the Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah to ask the federal government to allow us to develop the airport,” he said.

Abang Johari added besides developing the Limbang and Lawas areas, Sarawak was committed to developing areas in the Highland Development Agency (HDA), Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA) and right down to the Kuching areas.

“This means that the whole economy will be integrated and Sarawak’s future will be bright,” he said.

Earlier, the chief minister also approved the construction of a 13km road from the junction of Sakung to Ulu Lubai. The project will benefit four longhouses, schools and a clinic nearby.
