LIMBANG: The Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) is confident in the Limbang Water Treatment Plant’s capacity to generate 87 million litres per day (MLD) of treated water.

In a Facebook post yesterday (Mar 5), MUT Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said he had recently visited the Berawan Water Treatment Plant in Limbang, which currently produces 40 million litres per day (MLD) of treated water.

However, he stressed that the plant’s capacity can be expanded to reach 87 MLD.

“For the record, water treatment plants across Limbang division (located in Limbang and Lawas districts) have a combined capacity to produce 87 MLD of treated water, while current water demand sits at 40 MLD,” he said.

Nevertheless, he identified the high rate of non-revenue water (NRW) loss as a difficult challenge that requires immediate attention.

“There is an urgent need for new water sources and the construction of new water treatment plants, in addition to the installation of new water pipelines and replacing worn-out pipes in the identified area,” he added.

Julaihi also inspected the Sungai Limbang Raw Water Intake, located 27 kilometres from the LAKU Management Limbang office.

Before the site visits, he received briefings from LAKU Management and the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) on the latest water supply situation in Limbang division.

Also present during the visits were MUT permanent secretary Jafri Lias, MUT deputy permanent secretary Syed Fauzi Sahab, LAKU Management CEO Daneil Punang, JBALB director Awang Fadillah Awg Reduan, and water manager of LAKU Limbang division Muries Lukong.
