KUCHING: Local works of craft are now in popular demand among both locals and foreigners in Sarawak.

Many have taken interest in buying these local products with some even taking the initiative to learn these craftsmanship skills in the hope of making it as a source of income.

Entrepreneur Corrina Pitah who is from Bau, said she started the beading craft business in 2015.

“I started this business due to my deep interest in learning this craftsmanship. This business used to be a side income for me, but now (with it being in popular demand) I made this business as my main income source (starting this year),” she said.

She spoke to New Sarawak Tribune on the sidelines of the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) 15th Triennial General Meeting (TGM) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on today (June 18).

The 49-year-old stated that currently she is focusing on advertising her produce locally especially via Facebook and opening up booths at events as well as at Ayak Gallery Siniawan.

For this convention in particular, Corrina said thus far, her booth had received an overwhelming response.

Aside from her craftsmanship, her booth also displayed a variety of artwork and tuak by entrepreneurs from Ayak Gallery.

“Two of the most sought after products here are the face mask chain and women’s necklace. The necklace, due to its intricate craftsmanship, is sold for a little over RM100,” she said.

According to her, necklaces such as the loom beading take a little over a week to complete.

“This is because the usage of small beads and its designs require extra effort and details which need to be taken care of,” she added.
